Madison,WI --> Sioux Falls, SD

Leaving Madison, because there just wasn't a whole lot to see there. Well, not near our path...

The Simmmp-sons

Wisconsin Sky with an M3, Z3, and a Toyota. Too bad that wasn't an X5 on the right for an all BMW pic.

Delta area of the Mississsippi River, just over the border into Minnesota...

The Mississippi.

We passed the highway turnoff for Rochester, MN which is home of the main Mayo Clinic facility.

Minnesota (southern): much ado about nothing. There really was nothing to see. The entire trek to South Dakota. Except for a nice blue sky and very 3-D looking white clouds.

Okay, so on to South Dakota...

Advertisement for the Corn Palace located in Mitchell, South Dakota...

We did not check it out. I figured it would be like traveling to California and making an important stop at the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose.

We arrived in Sioux Falls about 6 pm. There were bikers everywhere at our hotel. But the mostly nice kind of bikers. They were in town for the downtown "Hot Harley Nights" taking place over this weekend. Next weekend is Sioux Falls' "Hot Summer Nights" downtown festival.

A tiny sampling of the ~200 Harleys.

Downtown Sioux Falls is a cute little town, and a little reminiscent of Austin, TX. Phillips Ave. is filled with bars and live music. There were tons of people around and not just bikers. It was a fun time happening.

This is Phillips Ave in the daytime. There is a Main St. one block over, but this appears to be the real main street...

Still some nice architecture around in the old buildings...

I don't know what this building is for, but it's nice.

Uh, Big Ben?

There is a "Sculpturewalk" on Phillips Ave, with sculptures by local artists, most made of bronze, or some kind of metal. There does not appear to be a theme; more like "anything goes". There is some kind of voting process setup for the favorite of the town.

Some kind of luneybird, made form car bumpers and other parts.

A little hard to see in this pic, but it's a dragonfly. Very nice. You can actually get a better idea from the shadow.

A slightly abstract John Lennon. Suiting, perhaps.

Jerry. This one gets my vote.

Odo upon arrival in Sioux Falls, SD. Hmmm, I think we may be "broken-in" now ;-)

On to Rapid City, SD tomorrow.

Cheers,
Jeff

The Winchester Mystery house is San Jose's most famous attraction (before the Sharks came to town). You should have stopped at the Corn Palace, to compare these national treasures :-)

Hey what happened to my other 2 posts from your last log entry?

I remember when I was growing up and seeing an advertisement like that one for the Corn Palace on Interstate 5 for the Winchester Mystery House.

Scott: You have been censored :-)
Those Winchester Mystery house billboards are still on I-5.

A photo of the odometer and Jerry in one blog entry, what more could ask for...

A bust of Jerry in my home town!

The Corn Palace has the corn kernels replaced annually. The entire exterior of the building is decorated with the colored corn (we used to call it "Indian Corn" but I don't know if that is the name used in this day and age). Lawrence Welk and Myron Floren played there frequently.

When I take Clyde to South Dakota, he will definitely see the Corn Palace :-) (After all, it IS a venue . . .)
